VisualEditor citation tool

Hi Ninjastrikers, I'm Johannes from the WMDE Technical Wishes team. We are currently working on technical improvements to references. We are especially looking at changes to support newcomer editors to add references whenever they are adding content to Wikipedia articles (or creating new articles). As part of our work we would like to support smaller and medium-sized wikis to activate Citoid and the VisualEditor citation tool which allow VE users to automatically create references or manually create references using standard citation temples. These features are currently used on ~130 Wikimedia projects (including all major ones like English Wikipedia). You are probably aware of them because you've edited on major wikis, but just in case: en:Help:VisualEditor#Adding a new reference shows some screenshots.

We would like to run a test on mywiki to measure how citation usage changes (hopefully increases) with those features activated – especially among newcomer editors. We could either do the necessary work (e.g. updating some citation templates / creating some mediawiki pages on mywiki) ourselves or support local admins to do it – whatever you prefer.

If the test confirms that VisualEditor users are more likely to add references when creating / editing an article with those features activated, we'll increase our efforts to support other projects to enable the feature. We would probably do the required changes beginning of December (once we've everything in place to measure differences in citation usage on mywiki) if you agree with the test. There are two things we would like to know:

• Which templates would you like to use as default templates in VisualEditor citations?
  • According to our data {{cite web}}, {{cite book}}, {{cite news}}, {{cite journal}} are the most used templates on mywiki – many projects are using those four as default templates (e.g. enwiki )
  • Other projects (e.g. dewiki ) just use their local cite web & cite book equivalent -> in that case VE will automatically use cite book for most news/journal sources.
  • Some projects use a single default template (e.g. plwiki ) which would be {{ကိုးကားခြင်း}} on mywiki
• Could you provide me with ~10 popular Burmese online sources? We would like to test some links in order to make sure there won't be issues with the automatic reference creation.

• {{cite web}}, {{cite book}}, {{cite news}}, {{cite journal}} will be the default tempates.
• {{ကိုးကားခြင်း}} may requires some update, therefore it will not be the default template for a while.
• The followings may be considered as the popular Burmese online sources.
  • BBC Burmese, DVB, Eleven Media, Xinhua Myanmar, Irrawaddy, Mizzima, Myanmar Digital News, Myanmar Now, RFA Burmese, VOM, One News and Ministry of Information.
