English: Ponies eating acorns on Parkhill Lawn, New Forest The dry weather during the summer has produced a 'bumper crop' of acorns, and now they are falling to the ground during the first windy days of autumn the ponies eagerly gobble them up. Commoners have been asked to release many more pigs onto the open Forest this autumn (a right of common known as 'pannage') so that the surplus of acorns can be consumed. If ponies gorge themselves on acorns they can die as a result. The younger pony on the right looks shaggy because it has been standing out in heavy showers of rain.
